Document and Valuables Storage
Insurance policies, passports, property deeds, medical records, and financial documents should have a fixed, known location in your home, and ideally a backup copy stored off-site or in a cloud-based system.
A fireproof, waterproof document box stored in an accessible accessible closet or home office cabinet is the minimum standard. Many homeowners keep one in their primary bedroom closet, which is typically among the most structurally protected rooms in the house and the last place accessed before evacuating.
Whatever system you use, it needs to be consistent year to year. A document storage solution that requires reorganization before each storm season is not a solution.
Garage Organization for Hurricane Equipment
Generators, extension cords, fuel containers, hand tools, storm shutters, and boarding materials are among the hardest items to manage in a Florida garage. They are large, heavy, infrequently used, and critically important when they are needed.
A few principles:
Give hurricane gear its own zone. Wall-mounted storage for cords and smaller equipment, a dedicated cabinet section for fuel management supplies, and a clear floor zone for the generator itself eliminate the search that costs time when time matters.
Store storm shutters and panels vertically. Panel shutters stored flat on a garage floor become a trip hazard and are difficult to access under pressure. Vertical wall storage racks allow them to be organized by window, labeled, and pulled in the right order.
Keep a written inventory. A simple list taped inside a cabinet door showing what is stored, where, and when it was last checked reduces the uncertainty that makes hurricane prep stressful.
A Well-Organized Home Recovers Faster
The benefit of organized emergency storage extends beyond the storm itself. Homes that recover fastest after a hurricane are homes where the cleanup supplies, the tarps, the tools, and the documentation are findable immediately. A generator that takes four hours to locate and start is a generator that did not help when the power went out on day one.
Organization is not just a comfort feature. In a storm context, it is a functional one.
